Janis (Jan) Strout

Response to GVS Questionnaire

Why do you want to run for the study commission?

Since moving to Bozeman in 1978, I have cared deeply about out City and Gallatin Valley and have sought to make it more fair, sustainable, safe and welcoming for all residents. I have been concerned about the changes that widen inequality, disrespect others, harm our environment and make it unaffordable for many who work here.

What skills and experience do you have that you think will help you in your role as a study commissioner?

My values are grounded in advancing all human rights - especially those of women and girls - and defending our democracy inform my skills and experiences. I taught critical thinking and communication skills for 10 years at MSU-Bozeman. And co-lead campaigns to achieve these.

Have you ever served in local government, either as an elected official or volunteered on an advisory board? If so, when and in what capacity?

I have not chosen to serve in that capacity, but helped elect some. In 1979, I co-founded HAVEN; in 1982, the MSU Women's Center and Students Against Sexual Assault; and later campaigns for pay equity and economic security with 2022 BZN City for CEDAW Resolution.

What would you hope to achieve if elected to serve as a study commissioner?

In my experiences as an educator and organizer, I have learned that people have a stake in what they help create. I hope to achieve a Study Review process that focuses on expanding ways for more diverse representation and democratic participation to assess our City Charter.
